Help the Free French? Not world-weary gunrunner Harry Morgan. But he changes his mind when a sultry siren-in-distress named Marie asks, "Anybody got a match?"

That iconic line ushered in a match made in Hollywood heaven, signalling the first meeting of stars Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, who would go on to marry in 1945 and collaborate on a number of productions over the next few years.

The pair's on-screen chemistry is one of the highlights of this wartime romantic adventure, which bears little similarity to Ernest Hemingway's source novel and more than a passing resemblance to 1942's all-time classic Casablanca.

Typically assured direction from Howard Hawks, a snappy script by William Faulkner and Jules Furthman – which affords Bacall another one of Hollywood's greatest lines; you'll know when you hear it – and a welcome musical cameo from Hoagy Carmichael add to the pleasures of this vintage piece of Hollywood escapism.
