Celebrate the launch of the Queer Up North digital archive with this one-off screening of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and the premiere of a new documentary short It’s Queer Up North: Saving the Show.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is a beloved Australian road movie musical, first previewed in Manchester at Queer Up North in 1994. Written and directed by Stephan Elliott, the film follows two drag queens and a transgender woman as they journey across the Australian Outback on a tour bus named Priscilla. On its release in 1994, it became a surprise worldwide hit, and won the Oscar for Best Costume Design at the 67th Academy Awards.

This special screening will also feature the premiere of It’s Queer Up North: Saving the Show - a new documentary short, directed by Brett Chapman, exploring the history of Queer Up North and the making of the archive.

This event will begin at the advertised time with no ads or trailers.

About Queer Up North
Queer Up North was one of the most pioneering and influential LGBTQ+ arts festivals in Europe. Founded in 1992, it quickly became a beacon for queer culture, drawing artists and audiences from across the globe, and played a pivotal role in shaping Manchester’s identity as an inclusive and vibrant LGBTQ+ city.

Now the original festival founders, Tanja Farman and Gavin Barlow, have teamed up with Manchester Histories to create the Queer Up North 1992-2002 digital archive, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Granada Foundation.

To See and Be Seen, artist Conor Collins’ first solo exhibition, is born from a deep exploration of the Queer Up North archive, and can be seen in HOME’s Granada Foundation Galleries until Sat 31 Oct.
