Co-created mural commission
HOME is working with Network Rail to commission a Manchester-based artist who will design and deliver a co-created mural as part of its ambitious Our City and Beyond programme.
Create a new artwork at Oxford Road station
The artist will create an artwork which will be installed on Oxford Road station in March 2027.
Together with other artwork presented on the station and surrounding area, this commission will transform Oxford Road Station and its surrounding infrastructure into a platform for storytelling which celebrates Manchester’s diverse communities, foregrounds underrepresented voices, and positions the railway as both a literal and symbolic connector across time, place, and people.
The successful lead artist will:
- Attend planning meetings, site visits and be in regular contact with HOME.
- Develop and deliver four engagement sessions with community groups, the content of which will inform the design of the mural.
- Produce necessary designs and mockups (note that HOME and Network Rail may require changes to be made).
- Provide necessary documentation for installing the artwork.
- Deliver a public mural on one of the platforms in Oxford Road train station.
- Be offered space for the engagement sessions in HOME Arches.
- Receive a fee of £4,850.
- Receive expenses of up to £100 for materials to deliver the engagement sessions.
- Receive expenses of up to £1,000 for materials to deliver the mural on site.
We expect the lead artist to work with a support artist who will:
Receive a fee of £2,600 to support the engagement sessions as well as the painting of the mural.
