A mid-career masterpiece within Claude Chabrol’s remarkable run of bourgeois psychological thrillers, La Femme infidèle traces the fallout after a husband’s discovery of his wife’s affair and his quiet, unnerving and devastating act of revenge.

The type of film that earned Chabrol his reputation as the “French Hitchcock”, La Femme infidèle has recently been reimagined for 2026 audiences by Russian auteur Andrey Zvyagintsev under the title Minotaur.  

Speakers 
Isabelle Vanderschelden taught Francophone Studies, Translation, and Film at Manchester Metropolitan University until 2021. Her research and publications cover film and audiovisual studies, as well as the transmedial uses of cinema to enrich language teaching and intercultural competence. She is currently affiliated with the Remelice Lab at the University of Orléans and a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Chester. 
 
Catherine Dousteyssier-Khoze is Professor of French at Durham University. She has written numerous books, critical editions and articles on nineteenth-century literature, and French cinema, including Claude Chabrol’s Aesthetics of Opacity (Edinburgh University Press, 2018). She is also the author of two works of literary fiction in French (La logique de l’amanite, Grasset, 2015; translated by Tina Kover as The Beauty of the Death Cap, Snuggly Books, 2018) and Les Malices (L’Harmattan, 2023).
