Set in New Delhi’s architecture school in 1974, In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones is a window into the lively college lives of a diverse cohort of students with little respect for traditional authority.
Drawn from screenwriter Arundhati Roy’s own experiences, the film presents a vibrant portrait of characters who had never appeared on the Indian screen before: westernised, English-speaking Indians carving out their own rich and complex youth culture.
The “Annie” of the title is Anand Grover: a student who is repeating his fifth year for the fourth time, and who breeds chickens in his hostel room. Along with his motley crew of friends, Annie finds himself drawn into continual conflict with his faculty nemesis Prof. Y.D. Billimoria, nicknamed by the group “Yamdoot” – the messenger of the God of Death.
Originally made for television, and now a cult classic, In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones captures the easy camaraderie of the students, the strong bonds of friendship and the ebullience of youth. Yet beneath the levity is a resistance to conformity and a firm belief in their idealistic dreams of social upliftment.
Restored in 4K by Film Heritage Foundation at L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory in association with the director Pradip Krishen. Funding provided by Film Heritage Foundation.
In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones was restored using the best surviving elements: the 16 mm original camera negative and sound negative preserved at the NFDC-National Film Archive of India and a 35mm release print preserved at Film Heritage Foundation.
The original camera negative had colour fading, broken splices, tears, scratches, mould, emulsion damage and previous tape repairs. Hours of manual work went into the film repair, digital restoration and the colour grading.
