Legacy supporters will be joining a community of like-minded people, passionate about HOME and culture in Manchester. Each year, we welcome legacy supporters to HOME to hear in person about our plans and progress, and legacy gifts are marked with a seat plaque in one of our theatres or cinemas.
When I die, I want to use any money left to benefit the people, places and things in life that have inspired, supported and given me so much in so many ways. This isn’t just about giving back; this is about giving forward to enable others to have similar rich experiences. Top of my list is a legacy to HOME.

How you can benefit from leaving a legacy
In the UK, legacies to charities are tax-free. This means that the value of any gift to HOME would be deducted from your estate before the calculation of inheritance tax. Your solicitor can advise you on the different ways in which your assets can be distributed and ensure your intentions are expressed in the correct legal terms.

The below information does not constitute financial or legal advice and we recommend speaking to your financial/legal advisor.
What kind of gift can I leave?
A charitable legacy can be a gift of money or other assets, for example:
Residuary legacy (a proportion of your estate) – this enables you to donate a percentage of the net value of your estate, or the remaining sum after you have provided for family and friends.
Pecuniary legacy (a specific sum of money) – a straightforward way to leave a set amount though please note that the actual value of the amount specified will usually depreciate over time due to inflation.
Donating assets or a specific item – examples include property, stocks and shares, paintings, or other valuable items, which can be retained or sold with proceeds used to support the work of HOME.
Your solicitor can help decide what works best for you.
I already have a Will — can I update it?
Yes. You can usually add a codicil (a short amendment) without rewriting your entire Will. A solicitor can help with this.
Can my gift support a specific area of HOME’s work?
Any gift we receive, no matter the size, makes a vital contribution to our ongoing work. Unrestricted gifts, of all sizes, are essential as they enable HOME to use your donation wherever the need is greatest. Whilst you are welcome to leave a gift for a specific area of our work, we encourage you to include the words 'general purposes' to allow HOME to adapt should a project no longer be running.
How do I express my wish to leave a legacy gift to HOME in my will?
We recommend that you speak with a solicitor but have provided some suggested wording below. To note, Greater Manchester Arts Centre Limited is HOME’s registered company name:
‘I/we give [insert amount / percentage] to Greater Manchester Arts Centre Limited, HOME, 2 Tony Wilson Place, First Street, Manchester, M15 4FN (Registered Charity Number: 514719), to be used for the purpose of supporting [e.g. education and community work], and I/we declare that the receipt of a proper officer for the time being of Greater Manchester Arts Centre Limited shall be a full and sufficient discharge to my/our Executors. If, at the time of my/our death, this purpose is no longer possible or practical in the opinion of the Trustees, I/we request that my/our gift be used for such charitable purposes at Greater Manchester Arts Centre Limited as the Trustees consider most closely fulfils my/our original intention.’
Do I need to tell you if I’ve included HOME in my Will?
There’s no obligation — but we’d love to know. It helps us plan for the future and allows us to thank you properly and welcome you into our community.
