Words can say one thing and look as though they mean another. In THEY’D SAY AIN’T NOBODY LIKE YOU, artist and graphic designer Amrit Randhawa presents a new body of text-based works that move between sincerity, humour and uncertainty. His phrases take the form of declarations, reassurances or questions, though who is speaking, and to whom, is left unsaid.

Randhawa is equally interested in the decisions that give words their appearance. Letterforms are human inventions, shaped by the tools, materials and technologies of their time. A typeface can lend a statement the authority of an official notice or the sentimentality of a greeting card. The choice of a font becomes a kind of casting decision. Working with letterpress, vinyl and Traffolyte, Randhawa explores what happens when language takes physical form.

Amrit Randhawa (b.1996, Stockport) is an artist, graphic designer and educator based between London and Manchester. His practice spans typography, publishing and text-based works, drawing on popular culture, vernacular graphic languages and the social histories of place.

He studied briefly in the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication at the University of Reading, before going on to teach typography at Central Saint Martins and fine art at the Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford.
