Callout For Young Performers | Opera For A Dying World
Louise Orwin and Company are looking for a group of young people who would like to participate in an exciting and playful week-long research and development workshop for their new show, OPERA FOR A DYING WORLD.
OPERA FOR A DYING WORLD is an experimental pop music opera which looks at the kind of stories, tropes and characters for women that are traditionally found in operas to ask how relevant they are today. We’re particularly interested in exploring the roles of tragic heroines in opera and this will include looking at opera’s obsession with their tragic and sometimes ridiculous deaths!

Who we're looking for:
We’re looking for female, femme/non-binary young people aged 14 to 18 who are interested in performance and music. No previous experience is required and you don’t have to be able to sing- although you will be singing with us all week! The only requirements are an enthusiasm for performing, play, exploration and fun.
What can you expect:
A week of playing games, chatting and exploring themes that are often found in operas to see if they are still relevant in todays world, and creating around 30 minutes of performance, which will include performing and singing. The week will conclude with a sharing of the performance we build on the final day together.
What you'll get out of it:
- Gain confidence working with Louise’s fun and experimental workshop style
- Meet new people
- Learn about making non-traditional theatre and devising
- Learn about the history of opera and help create empowering new stories
- Get the chance to work with two musicians who work in contemporary classical and pop music!
How this helps us:
This workshop will help us test out the music and performance ideas that we are currently exploring, as we work towards our premiere in 2027. As part of this phase of development, we are currently working with groups of teenagers around the country. We can’t make any promises, but once the work has been developed fully, there may be more opportunities to get involved with the finished product! As part of this week, we’d love to get your feedback on how the experience was for you, and in return, if you enjoyed working with us, we can keep you posted on how the project develops and other ways to participate in the future!
How to sign up:
Dates: Tuesday 11th - Friday 15th August, 10.30 - 5pm and Saturday 16th, 10am - 2pm
Location: HOME, The arches
About Louise Orwin
Louise Orwin is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist working across text, performance and video. She makes research-driven, participatory projects about what it means to identify as a queer femme in a fast-moving, media-saturated world that prizes patriarchal, heteronormative narratives. Her work is fiercely queer, feminist and intersectional and filled with a heady dose of pop culture. She's inspired by cultural trends online and in the real world, and often her work sees her conducting undercover, gonzo-style investigations.
